The Famous Big Ben Clock
Big Ben- Big Ben is located in London, England at the Houses of Parliaments
building. It is one of the worlds most recognized land marks.
In 1844Astronomer Royal, George Airy, was hired as the clockmaker to design
Big Ben. One of his requirements was that, “the first stroke of the hour bell
should register the time, correct to within one second per day, and furthermore
that it should telegraph its performance twice a day to Greenwich Observatory,
where a record would be kept." This was an amazing feat for this day and age.
The clock was finished in 1854 but the tower itself was not ready until 1858. |
